About Us
Hello.
Megan learned how to make Good Luck Spiders in school in
October 2008. That weekend she made a couple of spiders at home with her
beads and then showed them to her mom. It was lots of fun to be able to
make the spiders on her own. Megan's mom was very impressed. Megan's mom
asked her with her enthusiasm for
crafts if this was something that she might want to do for a
charity. She answered yes. Her mom asked which charity, and she
answered breast cancer. The spiders were pink, just her luck.
Megan's grandmother on her dad's side is a breast cancer survivor.
That's how it all started. Megan continued and made some
more spiders and bought some more beads. She took them to church, the
Karate Club,
drama lessons, and her mom even
took some to work ... and they sold.
The spiders were a little hard to make and
they were told
of
Dragon's Lair who started
their business in beads by making spiders. Megan and her mom contacted Dragon's Lair
and spoke to Vicki who told them to drop by and she would help them to make
an easier spider. So her mom took me her and she now makes them Vicki's
way. Dragon's Lair is also gives her a 20% discount on the beads to help
keep the supply costs down.
Megan thinks some beads are awesome, so
she and her mom went out to the
Sassy Beads who is also very gracious and are now giving
them a 20%
discount as well. Good Luck Spiders now has discounts from
Rideau Art and Beads in
Kemptville and Fabricland on Merivale Road. There are many other beads that
are purchased online as they are not available any other way.
Megan's grandparents on both sides help to
sell the Good Luck Spiders to many of their contacts.
Dragon's Lair invited Megan to a craft fair -
her first -
June 13th 2009. She actually sold 40 spiders in one day. Megan was also
interviewed for Cool Kids by Allie of the Smart Shopper. At the time of
this article she had made $700.00 for breast cancer.

Megan's mom contacted Sue Hendricks from the
Metcalfe Farmers Market (MFM) and
told her about the Good Luck Spiders for breast cancer. Sue invited them to
come to the Market providing a table free - they started at the MFM June
20th. Her first time there I sold 45 spiders in one day. Megan continues
selling her spiders at the Metcalfe Farmers Market until October each
year when it closes.
Megan has given many workshops
to teach others how to make the Good Luck Spiders - this started at the Rideau
Osgoode Karate Club June 27th, 2009 and another at the Medieval Festival
July 12th, 2009. Sessions are available each week at the MFM where you can
make your own spider. Caster Valley Elementary did a huge
workshop on December 14th 2010 to make 151 Good Luck Spiders which will
then be available to be sold. Thanks Castor Valley!
Megan started making earrings and sold 10
pairs at the MFM her first weekend - some people do not like spiders - funny
about that. Megan has also received donations for breast cancer without
purchases being made.
Lisa MacLeod our MPP donated a gift
basket for a raffle and started Megan with raffles to raise more money.
Megan has now started making bracelets.
All proceeds from the sales go to breast
cancer, except from the bracelets. The spiders sell for $5 with $4 going to the Women's Breast
Health Centre at The Ottawa Hospital for breast cancer research,
treatment, equipment, and education. The earrings sell for $6 with $4 from each going to breast cancer. The other
monies pay for the supplies to make the spiders and earrings. Megan's
bracelets sell for $25 - $40 depending on the number of beads with $5 to
breast cancer and $5 to my college fund from each as she has to make
some money for herself if
she wants to attend Le Cordon Bleu.
Everyone has been very supportive of
Megan's charity work and she would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone.
Megan plans to continue to make and sell Good
Luck Spider and Earrings to raise money for breast cancer. Megan has
also done a Good Luck Spider Birthday Party and would like to do more.
Kait started helping her friend Megan
with Good Luck Spiders last summer. She also helped with the Castor
valley workshop.
Kait loves crafts and helping out others.
Kait has volunteered with O-YA picking up trash in Osgoode Village, she
did her own neighbourhood food drive, and she has participated in Hoops
for Heart every year. In her free time, Kait enjoys drawing, painting,
making crafts, cycling and babysitting. After high school, Kait hopes
to attend university to study Volcanology or Archaeology.
Thanks for reading our story and we hope
that you will come to the Metcalfe Farmers Market to support them and
their chosen charity by purchasing a Good Luck Spider or some funky earrings.
We hope that you enjoy the website.
